U16s solid win.

Last game was a good warm-up against North Footscray. Another good team performance saw the U16s earn their 2nd win for the season - this time against Wyndhamvale.  Despite being undermanned (only 17 on the field for the last quarter, with a couple NQR) and despite a less than perfect start, the players rallied for a good win.  The most pleasing aspect of the performance was the endeavour to get to the ball, the determined backline and the assistance of players running past for the quick handball.  Our forward line was still too crowded at times and the players need to remember to lead in different directions, but the creativity and body work was pleasing to see. This was an improved opposition to the one the team defeated comfortably a few weeks ago, so it took a good team effort to win the game.  Plenty of things to think about and improve on for future games.  Keep working hard. Well done.

U16s Practice match v. Altona

Old Westbourne U16s had a great workout against a polished Altona U15A team on Sunday.  With no players on the bench and playing with only 17 men, the team fought bravely in the last half, recapturing some of the form of the previous week.  The endeavour and teamwork wasn’t quite there in the first half, and it showed on the scoreboard.  Some arguing and bickering started to creep into the game, and the teamwork and talking started to falter.  This was a lesson to the players that they need to be focussed 100% well before the game starts, and to be 100% supportive of their teammates throughout the game, regardless of the score.  Great positives to come out of the game were the lift in intensity after half time and the way the players ran out the game (despite few rest opportunities).  A hand/wrist injury to Josh Stephens appears to be not as serious as first feared.  Fingers are crossed that further tests and x-rays clear him for the important first round, when we will look forward to the return of a few more players.

Good Start for U16s - Practice Match

The U16s, with Jesse, Brad and Vince in the Coach’s box, had a promising debut in real match conditions against Wyndhamvale on Sunday 27th March.  The 4 quarter commitment shown by all the players (in ideal football weather) was encouraging to the coaching staff and parents, and will be a solid platform from which to focus on improving for the season ahead.  This was truly a team effort, with contributors all over the ground, and players willing to commit to the contest and help each other.  As coaches Jesse and Brad pointed out, the forward line was too crowded at times, the first option was not always taken and the running support was not always there, but this was still a pleasing first-up performance.  We still need a few more players to help with rotations and giving players a rest. Thanks to all the volunteers assisting with game day duties, especially Steve Lowery who stayed after his U14s game to be our match trainer.  Another practice game next week – versus Altona.   Go U16s!
